Biography

A native of Virginia, Kathy Holland attended the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and printmaking in 1978. That summer she studied wood-engraving with Blair Hughes-Stanton at the Central School of Art and Design in London, England. From 1979 to 1981 she worked in printmaking at the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven CT. Continually since university she has maintained her studio practice as her primary occupation, creating drawings, etchings, relief prints, and paintings which have been included in juried national and international exhibitions and solo shows. In addition she has done occasional work as a freelance graphic artist, medical illustrator, muralist, portraitist, art exhibition juror, and art instructor.

Kathy Holland emigrated to Canada in 1986 and settled in the small rural town of Deep River, Ontario, maintaining a home and studio there for over 11 years and eventually becoming a dual Canadian-American citizen. During that time her work was exhibited extensively in solo shows throughout Ontario and in juried shows across the US.

In 1997 Kathy Holland moved from Canada to East Tennessee and soon became active as an exhibiting member of the Art Market Gallery, a longstanding artist-run cooperative in Knoxville. Besides her studio work she has also taught drawing and painting on an ongoing basis at the Oak Ridge Art Center, and previously at the Knoxville Museum of Art. One recent project was a two-month solo working journey across the South Island of New Zealand, resulting in over 40 landscapes painted onsite in oils; another was creating 22 realistic illustrations of forest animals for a recently published series of children's books. An exhibition of her large-scale landscape paintings, along with works by fiber artist Althea Murphy-Price of the University of Tennessee, was held at the Emporium Building in downtown Knoxville in August 2013.

Kathy Holland's paintings, drawings, and original prints are included in public and private collections in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Uruguay. Her most recent work is on view at the Art Market Gallery. She lives and maintains a studio in Oak Ridge TN.
